Chandler police warn of a crime trend that targets holiday shoppers

Authorities are warning holiday shoppers to be vigilant this season against a rising crime trend known as "jugging."

The Chandler Police Department described "jugging" as when someone follows a victim from a bank or retail location with the intent to rob them.

Detective Eva Zermeno, of the department's media relations unit, reported a significant increase in this type of crime over the past few months.

Criminals engaging in "jugging" often observe individuals entering and leaving retail spaces, targeting those they believe are carrying cash or valuable items for quick theft.

Fortunately, there are steps to help prevent becoming a victim of "jugging," Zermeno added.

Steps to take to stay safe

Be aware of your surroundings: Before leaving a store, take a moment to check your surroundings. If you carry cash or valuables, keep them hidden as you head to your car or public transport.

Watch for followers: Ensure no one is following you when you leave the store or parking lot.

Secure your valuables: If you're heading to another location, keep your cash or valuables with you rather than leaving them in your vehicle. If you must leave items in your car, store them out of sight, preferably in the trunk.

Use the Buddy System: If possible, have someone accompany you. A second set of eyes can help spot potential threats you might overlook.

If unsure, call 911

If you suspect you’re in this situation, the best course of action is to contact the police. "If you feel unsafe, we urge you to call 911 immediately," Zermeno said.
