The Story

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The Bozeman Police Department and Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office arrested 36-year-old Sheldon Grandchamp on theft charges last week, highlighting a concerning trend of car break-ins in the Bozeman area.

Anna Antonecchia, a resident of Belgrade, reported her wallet stolen from her car parked outside her apartment last weekend.

"We were going out to the park, and I saw there was my headphones just on my front seat, and they were not left there the night before," Antonecchia said. "There wasn't really much damage done to my car, except for my wallet was taken with that driver's license in it."

The driver's license belonged to a family member who passed away a decade ago.

"It's really just like the last thing I have of him," she said. "It's just a driver's license. I guess it wouldn't really mean anything to anyone else, but like I said, it just means a lot to me."

After filing a report with Belgrade police, Antonecchia found her wallet returned to her apartment leasing office by Monday, with the license included.

NonStop Local reached out to Bozeman police, who confirmed this incident is part of a larger trend in the area.

"There had been an increase in those. And I know our detective division is looking into it as well... What we see more often than not is that things that are stolen are taken from vehicles that aren't secured at all,” said Detective Capt. Dana McNeil.

What they see most is suspects who walk along streets and check which cars have been left unlocked and steal what they can find inside, Capt. McNeil said.

According to arrest records for Grandchamp, he tried selling stolen construction tools via social media platforms like Facebook Marketplace. Investigators found a backpack in Grandchamp's truck containing tools such as chisels, pry bars, window breakers, and bolt cutters. He was arrested and held without bond.

Says the Police

"We tell people all the time... lock up your car and don't leave any valuables in it,” Capt. McNeil said. It's not like it's their fault if somebody breaks into their car. Just, take simple steps to secure your valuables; it is important."
