A powerful reminder that fast action, teamwork, and preparedness can save lives.

Five middle school students in Hancock County, Mississippi, are being praised for helping prevent a school bus crash after their driver lost consciousness during an asthma attack.

According to reporting from the Associated Press, the bus had just left Hancock Middle School on April 22 with about 40 students onboard when the driver, 46-year-old Leah Taylor, suffered an asthma attack and blacked out before she could use her medication. In a matter of seconds, several students stepped forward.

Twelve-year-old Jackson Casnave grabbed the steering wheel. Another sixth grader, Darrius Clark, helped hit the brakes and bring the bus onto the median. Kayleigh Clark called 911. Destiny Cornelius administered the driver’s nebulizer medication. McKenzy Finch supported the driver and answered a call from the district transportation team to explain what had happened. (AP News)

The bus was safely stopped, and Taylor later made a full recovery. She credited the students with saving her life and protecting everyone onboard. The students were later honored at a school pep rally for their courage and quick thinking. (AP News)

The video, captured from inside the bus, shows how quickly a routine school ride can become an emergency — and how important it is for people, systems, and organizations to be prepared for unexpected moments.
